After graduating with my master's in journalism from the University of Kansas, I spent just shy of 15 years working on staff at Sacramento magazine, a general lifestyle magazine based in California. At Sac Mag, as we lovingly refer to it, I wrote everything from short, front-of-the-book pieces to profiles, essays and multi-page city guides; assigned and edited stories; managed special publications and big features; blogged, Tweeted and Facebooked (OK, I made up that last verb); and served as the editorial department's spokesperson on local television and radio.
I loved my job and my co-workers, but I left the magazine to move to New York City, the birthplace of both of my parents, to explore my roots. While there I did some editing and lots of writing, but I spent most of my time checking items off my Bucket List (including running the NYC Marathon and going to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade) before returning to California. These days, I have a day job far removed from media but keep my creative juices flowing with occasional freelance pieces. My work has appeared in Sacramento magazine (where I was a regular contributing editor until the magazine was sold in July 2023), Guideposts, Inside Sacramento, Mysterious Ways and Angels on Earth; on the websites Clark.com and Salt Water; and in the anthologies Soul of the Narrator and More Birds of a Feather. This website acts as a portfolio of sorts, showcasing my recent work and some favorite pieces from throughout the years. Thank you for visiting! |
